One Hand Cant Clap has found an innovative and unique way to connect with disengaged boys in particular. Set up by Lorlett Hudson in 2000, the organisation uses role models, self awareness, story-telling, culture and history facilitated by the highly individual ‘Things Mama Used to Say’ proverb cards. Through its inventive methods OHCC allows de-motivated young people to have a voice and to share and discuss issues that affect them in their everyday lives. This builds their confidence and skills and in turn helps to reduce exclusion in schools and to reintegrate disengaged students into mainstream education. Ultimately One Hand Can’t Clap works towards reconnecting individuals with themselves, each other and their environment.

"One Hand Cant Clap" is both innovative and timely in its promotion of collective responsibility, as not only does this give young people a sense of community, and the knowledge that their achievements are important to others as well as themselves, but it also allows everyone-parents, teachers, families schools - to play a part in the education and socialisation of young developing minds. This programme will give young minority ethnic people the tools they will need to negotiate their own educational development and as such is absolutely necessary"
