Common Ties Seminar

Common Ties 9:
16th November 2017 @ Clapham Library

An evening of Celebration and Promotion of Caribbean Heritage and Culture.

A range of guest contributions, performances, and presentations will entertain, enthuse and enthrall, whilst also helping us all to reaffirm those “Common Ties” which bound together our parents, grandparents, and ancestors throughout our history, and sustain us today.

You will be part of an evening which will allow us to remember, celebrate, and look forward to preserving the culture from which the proverbs came.

Join us from 6.30-9.30pm.

Common Ties 8:
17th November 2016 @ Clapham Library

The Common Ties event at the Mary Seacole Centre at Clapham Library provided a fitting space for celebration of our lives....essential connections, resilience and resourcefulness as people.

The occasion offered positive reminders to take and make time for acknowledgment of self and others. The evening was a glorious inter-generational feast (including the warming soup graciously served and enjoyed!).

Our guest speakers took centre stage to reminisce about their lives and career path. With resilience being the theme, each person reminded us of our heritage, opportunities and life choices. Sharing memories of our upbringing and gratitude for our parents and community who paved the way with strong work ethics, discipline, tough love... a sense of good conduct and self worth, that instilled in us the value of education, preparedness, ambition and the sacred.

Together, we could appreciate the commitment, leadership and enterprise our elders showed in succeeding and progressively opening doors for others, creating strong  foundations, life-affirming values and vision for us all to aspire to, to cultivate resiliency and thrive!

Common Ties 7:
19th November 2015 @ Clapham Library

Our annual event took place on Thursday 19th November 2015 and was another great success with participants travelling from the Ivory Coast, USA, Germany, Caribbean in addition to different parts of the UK.

Guest speakers thrilled and inspired the audience with their stories of accomplishments and the reinvention of their careers and businesses. But the most valuable lesson from the ''Common Ties'' experience was the importance of community.

Lorlett Hudson, the host of the event, commented, "I felt quite humbled and honoured that I had the opportunity to be surrounded by such talented individuals.  I understand that it takes a village to raise a child, and now it has been proven that it takes a community to build a successful business. Once again thank you all for your continued support and look forward to seeing you again next year."

Common Ties 6:
20th November 2014 @ Clapham Library

This latest event marked ten years since the launch of the ‘Things Mama Used To Say’ gift card set. It proved to be as memorable as the previous five.  At its heart were stories of everyday people bringing about simple but powerful transformations in their lives, inspired by the philosophy of 'One Hand Cant Clap'.

The stories were a striking complement to testimony and insight from internationally renowned speakers and professionals drawing on decades of leadership experience with major institutions.

We were privileged to hear from Derrick Anderson, Lambeth Council's outgoing chief executive. With nearly twenty years' experience in that role in Lambeth and previously in Wolverhampton, he offered a truly unique perspective on 'being' a leader.
