Olivette Otele has become the UK’s first black female history professor. Otele is a historian at Bath Spa University. She tweeted: “Big news: my people, Bath Spa University has awarded me a professorship and a chair in history. May this open the door to many very hard working women, especially women of colour, even and specifically black women, in academia in general and in history in particular. In strength, peace and love my people.” When asked by History Today which moment in history she would most like to go back to during an interview with the publication earlier this year, Otele said: “Now is a good place for me as a scholar and a black woman.”
Otele, who is Congolese, was congratulated by her followers and friends on Twitter. Nicola Rollock, reader in equity and education at Goldsmiths University said: “Excellent! So very glad your contributions have been recognised. And then...there were 26 Black female professors.” [Source : The Voice, 26 Oct 2018] |
